Outdoor arts consortium Without Walls has revealed its largest-ever programme of events for 2021, stretching across multiple locations throughout the UK.

The open-air festival is welcoming 21 emerging and established artists to present works that explore themes such as identity, environmentalism, and relationships. This follows the UK Government’s announcement that outdoor live performances can resume from 17 May.

Highlights of the festival include Strong Lady’s Strong Enough, hip-hop dance in Roll Play by Simple Cypher, and Do What yah Mama told yah! by mother and daughter duo Blaze and Fatina.

The programme features a series of dance performances which explore a range of social justice and erasure issues. This includes Black Victorians by Jeanefer Jean-Charles, where dancers will reimagine the stories of characters through high-energy performances, and IRMA-sisters from Alleyne Dance.

Also included in the programme is an an interactive live art piece, titled Arrivals and Departures, by YARA + DAVINA. This exhibit addresses themes of life, death, and commemoration.

In a press statement, the organisers of Without Walls said “this new outdoor art programme from Without Walls will bring audiences together in a safe way to share moments of global empathy and joy. From the epic and spectacular, to the intimate and emotional, the Without Walls 2021 commissions offer a timely moment to explore social justice, family relationships, environmentalism, identity, and much more.”

The full programme is available on the Without Walls website, with the festivities beginning in Brighton in two months’ time.
