The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been on our screens for nearly 15 years now. Since then, we have been treated to over twenty films – most recently, Marvel and Disney+ have teamed up to create several miniseries’ following different Avengers. The first installment was WandaVision, with its final episode released last Friday (March 5).
Personally, WandaVision was something that I looked forward to every week, and the fact that this was not a series you could binge made it all the more exciting. Now that WandaVision has come to a close, what can we expect next?
Here is a little overview of what might be coming next from the show’s main characters and beyond.
Wanda Maximoff
The star, the hero, and in my opinion the strongest Avenger, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), recently came into her full powers as the Scarlet Witch.
She was last seen in a post-credit scene in an isolated log cabin in the mountains. What was she doing in this log cabin you ask? Well, after having left ancient sorceress Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) in Westview trapped in the form of nosy-neighbour Agnes, Wanda took the book of dark magic known as the Darkhold. We see her studying the book in her astral form, a parallel to Doctor Strange‘s methodology for studying in his solo film back in 2016.
Wanda no longer has the pretend-life she created in Westview, including her two children Tommy and Billy as well as Vision. All three were tied in with the Hex, the wonderful name Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) gave Westview. But in losing them, she has grown stronger as a person.
Where next?
Elizabeth Olsen is set to be starring alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is expected to be released on 25 March 2022. It may be likely that Wanda could possibly have learned every trick in the book when we next see her, in a literal sense.
Monica Rambeau
Audiences first met Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), the daughter of Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), as a child back in 2019’s Captain Marvel.
In WandaVision, Monica became the superhero she was destined to become in the comics: Photon. This transition occurs after Monica travels into the Hex on different occasions in WandaVision, with her body was absorbing more and more cosmic energy.
In the finale, the first of two post-credit scenes showed Monica being asked by a supposed FBI agent to enter a theatre to speak to someone. The FBI agent turns out to be a Skrull, who mentions that she was “sent by an old friend” of Monica’s mother who would like to meet with her. The Skrull points up to the sky after Monica asks, “where?”, suggesting that Monica’s next destination is space – potentially to meet Nick Fury.
Where next?
Monica is said to be next seen in Captain Marvel 2, which will be released on 11 November 2022. After her less than favourable reaction at the sound of Captain Marvel’s name in one of WandaVision’s earlier episodes, it will be interesting to see the pair interact together on screen.
Darcy Lewis and Jimmy Woo
It’s safe to say that the resurfacing of Darcy Lewis (Dennings) and Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) was very exciting. Although, I was a little bit sad at the lack of Darcy in the finale. Yes, she essentially saved the day from S.W.O.R.D director Tyler Hayword (John Stamberg), but I would have enjoyed seeing more of her character’s involvement.
Where next?
There aren’t any exact details on when the pair will be resurfacing again, but there are two films where it could be possible. After having made her MCU debut in Thor, we could see Darcy reappear in Thor: Love and Thunder – filming is currently underway, and it is due to be released in 2022. Agent Woo was in Ant-Man & The Wasp – and of course, learned that great card trick from Scott Lang (Paul Rudd). But where can we see him again? Possibly in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, again currently scheduled for release in 2022.
Although both Dennings and Park haven’t been announced for either project, I am still hopeful we will be seeing these fan favourites again very soon.
White Vision
Now, I’m not going to lie, it was amazing to see the ‘Vision vs Vision’ fight in the final episode. With Wanda’s Vision now gone and White Vision on the loose, when could we see him again? White Vision flew off after the now-infamous discussion between the two Visions about the Ship of Theseus, and I half expected him to swoop back in at the end.
There aren’t any exact points where White Vision has been confirmed that he will rejoin the MCU on screen, but alongside Wanda, he could potentially appear in the upcoming Doctor Strange film.
Coming Soon
Spider-Man: No Way Home
If the rumours are true, we could expect to see Tom Holland star alongside both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield this December. The only way this could be possible is if the multiverse was opened up.
After having watched WandaVision and ‘fake’ Pietro (Evan Peters, Quicksilver in X-Men) many fans began to ask if the multiverse could have opened up. How else could Agatha have gotten Pietro there? Sadly, we know that after Monica removed Agatha’s hold over him, he turned out to be your average ‘dude’. But how could Agatha have projected Quicksilver’s powers?
Could No Way Home tie in with the Multiverse of Madness? There’s no doubt in the next Doctor Strange we will be in the multiverse as he continues his research into the Time Stone – which could provide the link to No Way Home.
Potential X-Men Crossover?
In the Marvel comics, it is known that the Scarlet Witch and the Dark Phoenix have a very intense battle. And, of course, the Dark Phoenix is defeated. Although Pietro did not materialise as the X-Men-MCU link that fans originally believed him to be, there could still be time for a multiverse crossover now that Disney owns both Marvel and Fox.
