The raunchy antidote to months of government-mandated celibacy gets the go-ahead for a second season in London’s marriage market

Regency fans everywhere can rejoice as Bridgerton has officially been renewed for a second season. After being streamed by 63 million households within its first month, the Netflix and Shondaland collaboration was almost certainly destined for renewal.

Netflix confirmed the news on Friday, with a post from Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers telling fans “the incomparable cast of Bridgerton will return to production in the Spring of 2021.”

Season one followed Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and her relationship with Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings (Rege-Jean Page), but season two will focus on another member of the Bridgerton bunch. The eldest, and a viscount, Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) spent the first season suffering from star-crossed love with Siena Rosso, a sultry and captivating opera singer (Sabrina Bartlett).

Those who have read the show’s source material – Julia Quinn’s best-selling romance novels – will know there’s a lot more in store for him. Presumably, season two will follow the events of The Viscount Who Loved Me, which introduces Kate Sheffield as a love interest for Anthony.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Jonathan Bailey evaded any direct confirmation of what fans are desperate to know, stating: “Having read the second book, if Anthony gets to meet anyone half as brilliant as Kate Sheffield is, then he’s going to be a very lucky man.”

While Kate Sheffield remains a mystery, many fans believe that season two will surely answer some of the questions viewers were left with after the eighth, and final, episode—who has inherited the Featherington estate? When will the ton discover Lady Whistledown’s true identity? Will Eloise ever find out how a woman comes to be with child?

Hopefully, it will also offer more of what made season one so entertaining: string quartet covers of Taylor Swift’s Wildest Dreams, episode-long sexual romps through the grounds of stately homes, and wigs that hurt your neck just to look at.

It hasn’t all been corsets and curtsies for Bridgerton though. Many have taken issue with a sex scene featuring questionable consent while others have criticised the show’s approach to colour-blind casting. After hinting at a gay sex scene in its trailer, Bridgerton also failed to follow through on queer representation, leaving viewers disappointed.

Until season two airs, and perhaps remedies its mistakes, fans can watch TikTok’s musical take or read ahead to find out what happens to the Bridgerton clan.
