After an almost two-year-long agonising wait, fans of the indie trio, Wallows, have been graced with a new single to sink their teeth into. Members Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters, and Cole Preston have been flying under the radar since finishing their tour in 2023, which is hopefully a sure sign that more music is on the horizon.
Known for their abundant use of synths, Wallows’ catalogue is overflowing with dancefloor-filling indie tunes and ‘Your Apartment’ is no different. The track opens with a staccato guitar instrumental before the listener is engulfed by the incessant piano and drumbeats. The song disarms the listener with its almost suffocating backing in contrast to Minnette’s deep and honest vocals.
The standout on ‘Your Apartment’ has to be Preston’s drumming skills. The drum track is constantly changing up on its audience, making the song a delight to listen to. With each listen, ‘Your Apartment’ has something different to offer.
In comparison to the electro bounce that the song’s instrumentals have, the lyrics have a more sinister undertone. The song revolves around an unstable relationship with hints of infidelity: “Old wounds seem to open up with you / What am I supposed to do? / I don’t need to walk you through it”. Minnette and Lemasters team up for the chorus with their vocals perfectly blending together. Lemasters’ melancholic tone matches the desperation of the lyrics well: “But I promise, I get your sentiment / I wonder who’s been at your apartment / Would you give in, or would you relent? / Who’s been tryin’ to get in your bed?”.
‘Your Apartment’ is more similar in sound to the group’s first album, Nothing Happens. Compared to the more polished sound of Tell Me That It’s Over, this new release could easily slot into their more chaotic debut album. For long-time fans of Wallows, ‘Your Apartment’ may come as a nostalgic reminder as to why they first fell in love with the band.
While the band’s sound has never strayed too far from their norm, the hints of experiment in ‘Your Apartment’ make Wallows’ future all the more exciting. This teaser for their eventual third LP should satisfy fans for now but soon they’ll be begging for the boys to make their next musical move.
