They might have formed after a spontaneous, drunken Ferris wheel trip at End of the Road Festival in 2019 but what started as a drunken pact between Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers has steadily become a band with a viral hit and plenty of rave reviews from critics and listeners alike. After their riff heavy, tongue-in-cheek debut single ‘Chaise Longue’ comes ‘Wet Dream’, a two and a half minute single packed with catchy riffs, big hooks and post-punk vocal styling.
Opening with soaring guitars, rich vocal harmonies invite the listener straight into the story the band is telling. Revealing the narrative behind the song, Teasdale explains, it is a “break up song [that] came about when one of my ex’s went through a stage of texting me after we’d broken up telling me that ‘he had a dream about me”.
There’s a boldness to the duo’s music, through the blunt lyrics: “What makes you think you’re good enough/To think about me when you’re touching yourself?” and the playful post-punk sound which will surely be a hit for live audiences.
Their quirky style is emphasised by the accompanying music video, directed by Teasdale, in which the duo and their band belatedly realise that they have lobster claws for hands just as they are about to eat lobster. The video complements the song as it is surreal and dreamlike, whilst also adding to the sense of fun that the bouncy riff gives off.
In the wake of Taylor Swift and ‘Go Your Own Way’ era Fleetwood Mac, the Isle of Wight duo bring a breakup song with a cheeky, confident edge. They might only be at the start of their career but, with a sound that is impossible to pin down, Wet Leg have established themselves as one of the most exciting — if unpredictable — bands to date.
With support sets, upcoming festival dates and a 2022 tour promised, it seems we won’t have to wait long to see what else the in demand band has in store.
