A genre kickstarted by the likes of Lily Allen and Kate Nash but recently seeing champions such as Lauran Hibberd and Phoebe Green, is seeing a newcomer dominating the charts and completely reinventing what it means to be a female artist.
From securing a place on Fifa 23’s soundtrack (‘Big Talk’) and landing a spot on the coveted Chess Club Records, indie-pop princess SOFY is doing her best to be completely honest and open through her dizzying and fantastically infectious cuts.
Her latest venture into lush-pop stylings comes in the form of a love letter to whom, we can only assume, is her favourite actor – ‘Timothée Chalamet’ (and by her NSFW lyrics – we’re definitely not far from the truth). The track, plucked from her upcoming debut record, boasts funky basslines, an explosive soundscape and fast-paced lyrics to convey the whirl-wind romanticising of a fling with the Dune actor. With the lyrics even name-dropping Call Me By Your Name, the upbeat, euphoric and delightfully infectious cut is a prime final offering to tease Chaos and Commotion.
Joined on her new project by jabs at infidelity (‘Ashley Cole Type Beat’), soft romantic dotings (‘socks’), and the AM-era temptations of ‘WET PAINT’, Chaos and Commotion is set to be an impressive and well-rounded debut offering from SOFY – , “each song expresses a different part of me and the rollercoaster period of time that this record represents; falling in love one moment and out of love the next, going from feeling like I’m on top of the world to feeling like the world is moving without me, frustration and hope and anger and humour. I’ve lived, breathed and been totally engrossed in this world for the last year, so I just hope everyone straps in and enjoys the ride with me.”
