The sun is finally shining and with impeccable timing South African alt-pop group Honeymoan have dropped new single ‘Super Emotional’; a summery sonic cocktail of relatable lyrics and catchy electronic beats.

Arriving as the first track from their next EP, Palace, ‘Super Emotional’ is a frothy mix exploring the feeling associated with finding your way in the world. As singer Alison Rachel explains: “We sometimes try out a bunch of stuff like identities, relationships and careers in an attempt to figure out who we are.”

As we emerge from isolation into a changed world, the lyrics are likely to resonate with many; how better to explore the themes than as a sugary anthem packed with a feel-good vibe?

The song has strong echoes of early Lily Allen as we get a mixture of breezy vocals and staccato spoken delivery. The production leans heavily on a synthesised drum beat dancing alongside some distorted electronic guitar. We even get a ’80s nostalgia trip with a lengthy instrumental section, before we emerge with a mono-toned version of the chorus. At this point, it sounds like Honeymoan is channelling their inner Saint Etienne.

Overall, the track feels overly long as though the band are trying to cram in too many elements. However, lyrically there is some interesting imagery: “And now, tourist in this theme park of a self / Just a fancy animal in need of help”. The lyrics ensure the whole production avoids falling into cliché.

As the first rays of summer sunshine blaze, Honeymoan has brought us one of the first pop anthems of the season. With catchy hooks, timely lyrics, and enough coolness in the uplifting sound, ‘Super Emotional’ is one for any summer party.
