The Kid Laroi has proved that his music is not just relevant on TikTok. With his new release ‘Stay’ featuring global star Justin Bieber, he is telling the world that he is ready to dominate the music industry. The new track has climbed to the top spot of the US Spotify chart this week – earning over 50 million streams on the platform.

Before the release of ‘Stay,’ the Australian artist released a remix of his song ‘Without You’ featuring Miley Cyrus. Getting Cyrus to join the project shot The Kid Laroi into overnight global success. The song currently stands at 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in its 31st week – peaking at number 8.

‘Stay’ showcases pop perfection in the way the beat catches you. In the age where songs are being created to become TikTok dances – this song excels. Lyrically, the song treads more on the solemn side. However, its catchy, repetitive rhythm creates an uplifting, dance-worthy track. Both The Kid Laroi and Bieber’s vocals complement each other amazingly. Justin’s vocals seem to change from high to low quote quickly causing for an uncomfortable first listen – however, after the second or third listen it starts to grow on you.

The pair released an accompanying video, directed by Colin Tilley, who has also directed a few of Bieber’s music videos in the past. The video features people frozen whilst their surroundings continue alluding to the song’s lyrics: “Told you I’d change even when I knew I never could.” The video displays the parallels between the way Laroi is feeling in comparison with the people around him, with him stuck in moments and others moving past. The video also sees Laroi and Bieber dancing in the street and on rooftops, reminiscent of early 00’s punk videos from bands such as Blink-182. This sort of pop punk sound is rapidly returning to the music industry, especially with newer artists such as The Kid Laroi.

All in all, ‘Stay’ is a great track. It is perfect for the weather as it begins to warm up, and I’m sure that it will be played on repeat for the foreseeable future as the nightclubs begin to reopen.
