Belarusian synth-dynamites Molchat Doma (meaning The Houses Are Silent) have an impressive cult following, despite being an entirely Russian-speaking band. Having only formed in 2017, the trio are often revered as the leaders of the post-punk meets dark-wave scene, and see themselves in the company of artists such as Mareux, Lebanon Hanover and Bauhaus.
Plucked from their newly unveiled upcoming fourth record Belaya Polosa, their latest cut ‘Son’ breaks their four year hiatus with a fresh sound for the band. Coming in at six minutes long, ‘Son’ (or ‘Сон’ – translating to ‘Dream’) begins with an eerie atmospheric soundscape, complete with crashing thunder that breaks for the introduction of almost spaghetti-western-esque guitars that signifies a markedly new era for Molchat Doma. With drum machines reigning prominent, their cold delivery succinctly matches with textured synth movements and harrowing instrumentation.
Elaborating on the track, the band note: “‘Son’ was written before each group member experienced significant life changes, including a move to a new and unfamiliar country. It reflects the destruction of everything once familiar. The video aims to capture the emotion of leaving for the unknown, knowing there is no return to your old life.”
Belaya Polosa is slated for release September 6th.
