Track Review: Shining Star // Chloe Foy

Chloe Foy’s latest single ‘Shining Star’ is a delicate and heartfelt tribute to her late father. Foy’s deeply personal lyrics “He steps out from day to day / Fortune evades him still” are interlaced with a melancholic acoustic guitar and a peppering of strings. With its tender melodies ‘Shining Star’ reveals a range within Foy’s vocals and writing skills, leaning into a folksier musical styling rather than purely singer-songwriter.

Compared to her earlier releases, ‘Shining Star’ is a more mature and reflective song, combining eerie instrumentation and confessional writing, reminiscent of Laura Marling’s earlier work.

Describing the inspiration of the single, Foy reflects on her father’s decision not to follow his creative passion: “My dad was a talented artist and potter, but instead of following that path, he worked an office job in the pursuit of money which ultimately made him very unhappy.

“It gave me an early life lesson to follow a creative path if it presents itself and to ignore the pressures of society to conform to a certain life. Because it won’t necessarily make you happy.”

Showcasing growth in her songwriting, ‘Shining Star’ is a reminder to be truthful to yourself and an exciting first glimpse of Foy’s forthcoming debut, Where Shall We Begin, set for release on 11 June.
