Track Review: Purge The Poison // MARINA

According to MARINA, the chorus of her new single ‘Purge The Poison’ is sung from the perspective of Mother Nature, and she has a warning: humans are destroying the planet.

The track, released as the second single from MARINA’s upcoming fifth album Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land, is a stark reminder of the urgency of the climate crisis through a 2021 lens—“Quarantined all alone / Mother Nature’s on the phone / “What have you been doing? / Don’t forget, I am your home”—but it’s also a lot more than that.

Crammed into little over three minutes, MARINA manages to touch on everything from the momentum of the #MeToo movement, to racism, to media treatment of Britney Spears. It’s a witchy call for a cultural shift, carried out in her signature coo.

Lyrically, it’s a little on the nose. Rhyming couplets are shoehorned together in an attempt to confront all of society’s worst features, and the result is disjointed at times.

However, it’s a departure from the vapid synths of previous record Love + Fear, and longstanding MARINA fans will likely welcome the return to her sonic roots. Harking back to her idiosyncratic brand of alt-pop theatrics, ‘Purge The Poison’ further sets the tone for a potent comeback from one of Britain’s most dynamic artists.
