Fans of Rex Orange County will be ecstatic to hear that he has released the third single, ‘OPEN A WINDOW’, off of his new album, WHO CARES?.
The single, which features versatile Californian rapper Tyler, The Creator, stations Alex O’Connor’s staple silky vocals, alongside a relaxed RnB type beat. ‘OPEN A WINDOW’ encompasses Rex Orange County’s ability to mix pop, RnB, and indie to create a soothing and catchy new sound.
The track gives fans an insight into what to expect from his upcoming album, which seems to be a conceptual shift from the previous albums he has released. Having previously gained popularity for his self-deprecating lyrics, ‘OPEN A WINDOW’ is a departure from his melancholic approach. This is evident in the lyrics: ‘Stuck here and I never seem to get away, but I’ll hold on / I’m tryna find a way out’. There seems to be a much more positive take here – an attempt to escape the situation he is in, whilst reminding fans that whatever they are going through, there is always a way out.
The feature from Tyler, The Creator, was especially exciting, as this is the first time the two have collaborated on a track since Flower Boy in 2017. Tyler’s verse really completes the tune – his distinctive flow fits with the RnB/pop blend.
‘OPEN A WINDOW’ is utterly fantastic. It’s a feel-good tune that could be enjoyed by anyone, and is a great insight into what fans can expect from Rex Orange County’s newest album, WHO CARES?.
