Track Review: Obelisk // Northlane

Since original vocalist Adrian Filipades’ departure from Australian metalcore outfit Northlane, an audition process was carried out to find the band’s new singer – the result being Marcus Bridge. During Filipades’ tenure, the band released two crushing albums in Discoveries and Singularity. Their third album, Node, is released later this summer. The band released a second preview track, ‘Obelisk’ this week, following on from the Deftones-esque ‘Rot’.

‘Obelisk’ has a resemblance to ‘Rot’, however the slow atmospheric guitars enhance the emotion. While Bridge’s layered screaming and singing is innovative, it dominates the mix. Perhaps this could have been improved, because there is some really technical guitar work from John Deiley and Josh Smith buried underneath. The track does boast a powerful chorus though, perfect for a live setting.

If this is an indication of the album’s sound, hopefully the mix will be consistent – however, it should still appeal to existing Northlane fans.
