Matt Maltese returns with his haunting new single ‘Mother’, which offers an alternative perspective on the aftermath of a breakup through the lens of the family emancipated in the process. With his characteristic mellow piano and honest, witty lyricism, Maltese is the master of illustrating a heart-breaking snapshot of ordinary life.

He consoles his mother, stating ‘’You never thought you’d grow a blood bond to another / You didn’t birth, but that’s the joy of human nature’’. This line celebrates the emotional complexity of human nature and our ability to empathise so deeply with each other.

Speaking on his Instagram, Maltese said ”It was like losing a family member overnight when the breakup happened and I remember comforting with a line […] you’ll learn to love again’.’

He documents this grief in the music video, a nostalgic autumnal escape into nature. The video then concludes with a simple and unifying hug that reminds us how music can heal and bring us together.
