Track Review: Michelangelo // Cassandra Jenkins

“I’m a three-legged dog, working with what I’ve got / and part of me will always be looking for what I lost” opens Cassandra Jenkins on moving new new single ‘Michelangelo’.

The track is the first release from her forthcoming album An Overview on Phenomenal Nature and is a dreamy slice of Americana tinged with a folk ambience. “Nothing ever really disappears,” the New York based singer explains, “It just changes shape.” The track builds on this theme both lyrically and sonically. Starting with with breathy vocals over a gently picked electrical guitar it builds to a crescendo of drum crashes and distorted fuzzy guitar. Above it, all the honeyed vocals tell of a life in limbo. The song itself has no defined chorus and touches upon the impact of one dramatic life change to another which the singer experienced during the writing of her album.

While ‘Michelangelo’ and its metaphor of the three-legged dog is all about finding the sense of balance before life shifts again, the song itself is a swirl of ambient folk that holds the listener entranced. If the fluidity continues through the album it will certainly be a musical treat.
