Sometimes, it takes me a few listens of a song to form a proper opinion on it – I’ll put my ear-buds in and remove any distractions and really focus on the lyrics and the instruments and the way it makes me feel. With this demo from Northern band Kiings, however, it only took me one listen to convince me to add it to my playlist.

‘Under The Lights’ consists of peaceful verses which develop into lively choruses; the build-up in the song is nigh-on perfect – soft, understated vocals are layered over a catchy drum beat and an electric guitar, pulled together to create a fresh and interesting sound that’s very easy to subconsciously tap your foot along to. There is a subtle echo added to the vocals at points, creating a slightly ethereal element to the track, intensifying the vocals and furthering the distinctive sound created by the other instruments.

This track is really worth a listen – it’s new, it’s catchy, and it’s bright; there is some sort of uplifting quality hidden amongst the layers of the song that I can’t get enough of. I’m really looking forward to hearing more from Kiings in the very near future, and I hope, after listening to ‘Under The Lights’, that you will too.

Kiings’ EP ‘II’ is available on iTunes now.
