Dream-pop newcomers Talk More have certainly been reading from the Wolf Alice playbook when it comes to their new single ‘King Street’. From the booming fuzz of the guitars to the honeyed melody that overlays them, listeners familiar with the genre will struggle to find much originality in the band’s most recent offering.
This being said, Talk More are a pretty young band, and even as their sound is still evolving, they aren’t just borrowing the tools from established musicians – they’ve also mastered them. If ‘King Street’ is a carbon copy of Wolf Alice, it’s also one of the most gorgeous and invigorating carbon copies that I have ever heard.
The band displays proficiency in the marriage of two rather disparate tones; the light, near-celestial lead guitar work, and the powerful, chugging rhythm section over which it soars. The expert mashing of these contradictory elements creates a huge, pulsating wall of noise that positively bristles with energy. Talk More’s sound is dreamy, yet urgent; ethereal yet emphatic. And, yes, perhaps a little derivative. But for the time being, this hardly matters. ‘King Street’ is a testament to the band’s breath-taking talent for crafting wonderfully ambient alt-rock tunes, and I am confident that there is a great deal more to look forward to.
