The Pretty Reckless have recently disclosed the forthcoming release of a new record, Other Worlds, set for release on 4th November 2022. Having only been a year since the last release, we are left feeling pretty lucky to have another surprise quite so soon. The album includes a tender and touching acoustic rework of the original ‘Harley Darling’ single, with the first version seen on the 2021 album, Death By Rock And Roll. The new single will appear alongside many well-known renditions, such as ‘Got So High’.
Frontwoman Taylor Momsen described the song as “a love letter to Kato Khandwala,” the late producer of The Pretty Reckless. ‘Harley Darling’ tells the story of loss and the feelings that accompany it; something that everyone — no matter their age, or experience — can relate to with pure heartfelt emotion. The single touches on the bittersweet twists and turns of life, making ‘Harley Darling’ feel so much more personal to not only the band but also the listeners.
The way in which Momsen has displayed her feelings, and the optimistic-yet-somber emotions of the track, are lyrically genius. The stripped-down nature of the number, not forgetting the stunning instrumental work done by the band, exposes the depths of the thought put into the piece.
Whilst the original sound and feel of the track remain similar, Momsen and the band display a striking performance, showcasing the duality of style that The Pretty Reckless are so widely praised for. From heavier rock pieces, to slow grunge melodies, they have done it all. The refusal of the band to stick to a singular genre never fails to feel refreshing; this is what makes ‘Harley Darling’ such a hit. The albums constantly remain feeling new, and unique. We hear Taylor’s voice in a completely different way, yet one that feels so familiar.
