Canadian singer-songwriter JP Saxe has released his latest single ‘Everything Ends’, featuring Lizzy McAlpine and Tiny Habits – and it’s sounding like one of his best yet.
The multi-instrumentalist is perhaps best known for his collaboration with his ex-girlfriend Julia Michaels, ‘If The World Was Ending’, which received a Grammy nomination in 2021. ‘Everything Ends’ definitely has similarities to his most well-known track, but provides more depth, and showcases Saxe’s emotional growth.
The single opens with a soft, oscillating guitar melody, accompanied by silky smooth vocals. The addition of American singer-songwriter Lizzy McAlpine, who is best known for her viral dreamy folk-pop ballad ‘Ceilings’, is perfect, with her hauntingly beautiful voice intertwining gorgeously with the instrumental.
Acoustic folk pop trio Tiny Habits, consisting of Maya Rae, Cinya Khan, and Judah Mayowa, help to craft a glorious choral soundscape, with the endless harmonies and the super slick production on this track creating a sublime listening experience.
Lyrically, the song evokes themes of longing, lost love, and ultimately, acceptance, with Saxe saying ‘Everything ends / Everything ends but us’. The singer-songwriter is incredibly introspective, particularly when he sings ‘Maybe if my memory was better / I’d be less afraid of losing what I can’t remember’.
On Twitter, he said the track was about ‘nostalgia and trauma bonding and cute puppies’, which has led fans to speculate it may be about his ex-girlfriend and collaborator, Julia Michaels.
The accompanying music video is comforting and light-hearted, featuring the artists sitting around a campfire, and walking through an ethereal garden.
JP Saxe will be supporting John Mayer on tour later this year, with the first show taking place in New York on the 3rd of October.
