Earlier this week, singer-songwriter Beck aired his first offering ‘Dreams’, a track from his upcoming thirteenth studio album. The track is a swift follow-up to the hugely successful Morning Phase (which controversially won ‘Album of the Year’ at the Grammy Awards earlier this year) and couldn’t be more different to the stripped back, folk rock album.
Inspired by Daft Punk and MGMT, ‘Dreams’ is just another example of what has kept the singer eminent since the release of his debut LP Golden Feelings twenty-two years ago. Written by Beck himself along with Greg Kurstin and Andrew Wyatt, the five-minute single features funky riffs, heavy drums a whole lot of layering. Lyrics such as “When nothing is right / Just close your eyes / Close your eyes and you’re gone” are sung in a way that is reminiscent of the garage rock style often heard from singers Dan Auerbach and James Mercer, making ‘Dreams’ a track that could easily be mistaken for a The Black Keys/Broken Bells crossover.

The single was originally put together casually so that the multi-instrumentalist could have something upbeat to play on tour and truly showcases Beck as a master of reinvention. Despite being unfinished, untitled and with no hint of a release date yet, ‘Dreams’ has made Beck’s next studio album feel as though it is just around the corner. If this exciting feel-good release is a notion of what we can expect from the new album, then the anticipation is already killing us.
‘Dreams’ is available on iTunes and streaming services in the UK and Beck can be found playing the single live across Europe this sumer.
