Track Review: Delilah (pull me out of this) // Fred again..

The release date for ‘Delilah (pull me out of this)’ was left in the hands of the fans via public vote on social media. This is the fourth single from Fred again..’s upcoming album, Actual Life 3. Delilah Montagu features on this track and it samples her own song ‘Lost Keys’ which was released in 2021.

Fred plucks excerpts of voice messages and recordings from his daily life, and formulates a mix around it. Nowadays we strive to seek authenticity in artists but we often find ourselves drowning in the masses of brief TikTok trends instead. By mixing his real-life encounters with his original beats, the listeners find a sense of sincerity and have clutched onto this connection.

Delilah’s vocal is the first element we hear lending a haunting intro to the listener with her sobering lyrics: “So when I just got here / I was just a bit like / I don’t want to be here anymore / Pull me out of this.” Fred appears to be obsessed with finding the beauty in any moment that is presented to us, no matter how troubling or tiresome, or fleeting it may be. On release day, Fred shared with his social media followers that ‘Delilah (pull me out of this)’ was originally written about “having a panic attack in a club, and needing your person to pull you out of it.” The drum in ‘Delilah (pull me out of this)’ is Fred’s forte in this instance providing a constant throughout the track, only briefly taking respite midway through before restoring the beat. It mirrors his thumping heart, swollen with anxiety as he grapples with escaping the crowd.

His iconic flair for shaping real-life situations and turning them into art is a credit to him and his willingness to share such delicate elements of his life. He frames the moment and dissects dilemmas that people face every day while ultimately trying to uncover the beauty in even the toughest of times. His releases to date have been a combination of aural murals and sonic scrapbooks fused to form his own distinct style.
