Dua Lipa’s ‘Dance The Night’ has been released as part of Barbie: The Album. Proving to be an excellent comeback three years after Future Nostalgia, this single provides a peek into a promising movie soundtrack.
The lyrics boast an unshakeable confidence and carefree disposition that stays true to Barbie, while also allowing Dua Lipa to employ her signature sound, heard in the instrumentation with its harmonious synthesizers and energetic bass riff. Her use of imagery has always been strong, as proven by ‘Cool’ and ‘New Rules’. What makes ‘Dance The Night’ different is that it is more visceral. Aside from tapping into momentary feelings such as the urge to move with the music, it articulates the desire to escape the mundanities of life. Due to the catchy music, it’s easy to overlook substantial lyrics such as “my heart could be burning / but you won’t see it on my face”. Beyond the melody, this shows Dua Lipa’s lyrical prowess.
Although she has only written a few soundtracks for movies such as Sing 2 and Bruised, this proves that she has the grit and talent for it. She seems to have mastered setting the mood, with the opening lines, “baby, you can find me under the lights / diamonds under my eyes”. Encapsulating the charisma that comes with being glammed up for a night out, the ambience it exudes stays true to Barbie as we know her.
Showing a newfound skill in her songwriting abilities along with a sound she is famed for, it’s no doubt Dua Lipa has perfected her formula, and we buy into it all the time, simply because it’s fun. A lighthearted tune sure to get anyone dancing, be it kids, adults, Barbies, Kens, it supports the saying that girls just wanna have fun. In fact, we all do, and ‘Dance The Night’ is the perfect soundtrack for it.
