4. Another Number // The Cribs
Pulled from their debut album, ‘Another Number’ is a tender and delicate track, depressing and raw. One of the few songs that was performed by the Cribs during one of their first ever appearances as a band – their eleventh gig, a ramshackle yet lovable spectacle at Leeds Festival’s Play/Comedy tent in 2002 – it has since made its way into the hearts of the Cribs faithful, and is now a long-time beloved crowd favourite. With simple guitars layered over heavy bass, the soft cooing of touching lyrics make for feelings of utter loneliness and a low, low sense of self-worth: “I’m alone, and cold / just another number on another row.” Tinged with feelings of alienation and isolation, it makes for a cathartic and therapeutic listen: we’ve all been there at some point, at some time.
