Violet
Unlike, the previous track on this list, ‘Violet’ is a vitriol abandonment of romance. Some speculate this vehement, guttural attack was directed towards the very man with whom the previous track was co-written by… maybe time does heal all wounds. ‘Violet’ is the iconic Hole track, violent, visceral and volcanic. “Go on take everything / take everything / I want you to” displays Hole’s ability to throw one hell of a tantrum and emerge like phoenix, powerful not powerless.
Love claims she wants to give “the violet more violence” and does so all whilst competing vocally with the equally angry rhythmic guitars present in this single from Live Through This. ‘Violet’ is unapologetically angst ridden and plagued with juxtaposed ideas “when they get what they want, they never want it again.” You really couldn’t ask for much more from this Hole track.
album or in a playlist…in essence the most eminently listenable song of 2016 – My wife now hates it.
