We Used To Wait // The Suburbs (2010)
Another romantic look at life in the American suburbs as an ever-evolving teenager. Described as ‘neither a love letter to, nor an indictment of, the suburbs’, by band member Will Butler to NME (31st July 2010, pg. 24), ‘We Used To Wait’ perfectly encapsulates the idea of a story from the suburbs rather than an opinion.
A mid-tempo but uplifting song from beginning to end, the main refrain “we used to wait for it” allows us to decide for ourselves whether life in the suburbs was a comfortable or lacklustre way to grow up. Followed up by the line “Now our lives are changing fast”, we see the reflective side of the album come to light as the band remember the innocent times of childhood, knowing that the reality of adulthood is looming over the horizon.
Complemented by a revolutionary video that allowed users to view the streets they grew up on whilst the song plays, the second single from The Suburbs provided fans with a second helping of starry-eyed nostalgia.
