Tom Hiddleston to Return Next Year in ‘Loki’ on Disney+

The God of Mischief is to return to our screens in May 2021, according to an announcement made by Kevin Fiege at Disney’s 2020 Investor Day presentation. The series, simply titled Loki, will be released in six parts on Disney+.

Loki will be directed by Kate Herron, with screenplay from Michael Waldron. Tom Hiddleston will star alongside Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, and Richard E. Grant. The plot is rumoured to follow Loki through time, as he influences various historical events. The genre, according to Disney, will be crime-thriller, which the company have not yet explored.

We last saw Loki when he got hold of the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame. The original Loki died in the first part of this cinematic event, Avengers: Infinity War, however the Russo brothers have now confirmed that an earlier, more evil version created an alternate timeline in Endgame, using the Tesseract to escape.

This new alternative timeline would mean that Loki had not been involved in either of the Thor sequels or Infinity War (all of which constituted as a redemption arc), as the new timeline is created after the Battle of New York, as seen in 2012’s The Avengers. Fans can only hope that some of this complicated timeline is explained in Disney’s spin-off.

The trailer offers us a glimpse of what has happened to Loki since this event, and promises to be every bit as cinematic as the MCU’s previous ventures. You can watch the teaser below:

Other new ventures were announced by Disney on their Investor Day, meaning that fans who left Endgame with questions might get some of them answered in 2021. Disney want to rely less on features over the coming years, and their announcement told audiences that there are 22 series on the way. The first of these to stream will be WandaVision, which is set to premiere in January.
