Once voted as one of the best dance tracks of all time, ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ is as well known for its controversy as it is for its actual credits as a song. The video for ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ was rated by MTV as one of the most controversial videos for a track and it received criticism by many groups for its depictions of crime, violence, drug use, nudity and sexual content – though it equally received praise for its directorial creativity and role reversal (the protagonist being a female embarking upon a night of “lad” activities, such as snorting cocaine and having sex with a prostitute).

Away from the issues relating to the content of the video, ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ is an undeniably iconic rave hit from the nineties that has featured in soundtracks such as Charlie’s Angels, Misfits, Permanent Midnight and many television documentaries. Overall, ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ is about as nineties English rave scene as you can get, and deserves credit as such.
