The Theatres Trust have released their annual list of theatres that they believe are at risk of demolition or permanent closure in the near future.

The list, which was released last Thursday, contains 31 theatres across the UK including the Derby Hippodrome, Swansea Palace, and Leith Theatre in Edinburgh.

The list is known as the Theatres at Risk Register, and its purpose is to draw public attention to buildings at risk of closure and highlight their opportunities and challenges.

The theatres on the list have strong architectural or cultural heritage, and all have the potential to be returned to a suitable state for performances.

The Co-op Music Hall in Ramsbottom is the only theatre that has been added to the register this year. The building is a musical hall from the 1870s and is currently being considered for housing despite its good condition.

In a statement, Theatres Trust Director Jon Morgan said “this past year has shown that communities value places where they can come together and that audiences miss live performances

“While the theatre sector still has challenging days ahead, Theatres Trust believes that theatre will come back stronger than ever and that each building on the Theatres at Risk list has real potential to be a valuable asset to its community, to bring much needed footfall to its town centre and spark regeneration of its area as part of the recovery post-Covid.”
