The Improvised Play: Arcola Theatre, 5-9 March
This play will be like nothing you have ever seen before, as even the actors don’t know what is going to happen. In this interactive theatre experience, it is the audience that are sitting in the directors chair. No two shows are ever the same because the show is based solely on the audience’s suggestions. This spontaneous comedy will entirely be in your hands, so get your suggestions ready and get involved in this new theatre performance.
In Clay: Upstairs at the Gatehouse, 13 March – 7 April
Written by Rebecca Simmons, this new musical is the based on the real life of Marie Berthe Cazin, who was a French painter and ceramicist. This one woman show details the history Marie’s life having worked alongside male artists throughout her life and career. Marie is rumoured to have had credit taken for several pieces. This new-age production will also be accompanied by an exhibition celebrating contemporary women ceramicists, curated by Rose Gleadle. A remarkable true story being told through award-winning songs, this new feminist musical is not one to be missed.
Playground Proms: UK tour, 18 March – 6 July
An extensive nationwide tour of Playground Proms, a project founded by the comedic string quartet Graffiti Classics, intends to introduce classical music to a youthful audience of 50,000 in isolated and underprivileged areas of the UK. Though mainly targeted at 5–11-year-olds, the whole school can attend. Following the schools’ workshops, there will be pop-up performances in key areas in the regions being visited for the wider community to enjoy. The show will be visiting schools in Norfolk, Kent, Lancashire and many others.
VAULT Gala: Light At The End Of The Tunnel: Shoreditch Town Hall, 19 March
This brand-new fundraiser comedy show will be hosted by comedian and writer, Sophie Duker, who has made an appearance on the show Taskmaster. The event will feature performances from comedians, drag performers, circus acts and so many more. VAULT exists to platform work from underrepresented artists who otherwise may not have access to opportunities elsewhere. Pansexual Pregnant Piracy: Soho Theatre, 26 March – 13 April
This loud, musical queer comedy tells the exciting true story of eighteenth-century pirate Anne Bonny, who acts as a man to board the pirate ship. Join Anne as she travels across the oceans with her companion Calico Jack in search of treasure. However, the quest is soon go awry when an attractive teammate called Mary Read boards the ship. Things will start to get very complicated as Anne Bonny is trying to keep her true identity under wraps. Make sure you board the ship and get your tickets for this queer-tastic comedy before it’s too late.
Whodunnit (Unrehearsed) 3: Park Theatre, 27 March – 4 May
This is the third instalment of Park’s Theatre Whodunnit (Unrehearsed) series. If you want Agatha Christie but without the intelligent detective then this is the show for you. Over the course of it’s run there will be up to 45 different detectives, who have never seen the script and will be fed their lines on the spot via earpieces. Some of the actors in the line-up include: Gillian Anderson, Brian Cox and Benedict Cumberbatch. Come and get involved in this murder mystery that is like no other. Will you be able to solve it?
Gamble: UK tour, 15 Feb – 28 Mar
Gamble, a multimedia theatrical piece, is looking beneath the glitzy jackpots and large wins to examine the intricacies of addiction and the toll it takes on addicts’ loved ones. Based on Hannah Walker’s own experience dating a compulsive gambler and interviews with specialists, medical professionals, people in recovery, friends, and relatives. Gamble will be touring in places such as: Newcastle, Birmingham and Colchester, before finishing the tour at the Exeter Phoenix.
Bridge Command: London, Previews from 27 March
Bridge Command, created by renowned interactive theatre company Parabolic, will challenge the public to become the Bridge crew of a fully functional starship where they must cooperate to protect humanity from disaster when the experience opens in London in 2024. May Contain Food May Contain You: UK Tour, 23 February – 13 April
This unique adaption, to music by renowned composer and published home cook Orlando Gough, is a duet presented in more private venues near communities like village halls and arts centres. Many venues will be connected with a local foodbank, and audiences are encouraged to participate by bringing and sharing homemade meals and locally produced or homegrown food for table picnics.
