6. ‘Star Treatment’// Tranquillity Base Hotel & Casino
“I just wanted to be one of The Strokes”, proclaims Turner who looks back at his career and the memories within it. Tranquillity Base Hotel and Casino polarised fans, but for me it was a strong, reinventive album that succeeded in creating a whole new world in ways not many albums can. ‘Star Treatment’ typifies that. It’s arguably Alex Turner’s strongest vocal performance on any Arctic Monkeys song as he comes of age with a Bowie-inspired sound. The high-pitched hooks and a standout performance from Nick O’Malley on the bass make this the perfect song to listen to as the sun sets.
For those of you who aren’t fans of the album, ‘Star Treatment’ may seem an undeserved inclusion in this list. However, it deserves its place as it’s a true marker of how far Arctic Monkeys have come. Rowdy to mature, loud to tranquil. It’s a marker of their longevity, success, and most importantly it shows they have maintained their ability to make a masterpiece.
