Every Day Is Exactly The Same // Nine Inch Nails

If your lockdown has been monotonous, drawn out and given you far too much time for reflective thought, Nine Inch Nails probably know how you feel. With lockdown in mind, ‘Every Day Is Exactly The Same’ connotes a sense of time being beyond our control, and standing still as your present morphes with your future.

Especially in the early phases of lockdown, it was very easy to feel hopeless and stuck, something that this track captures perfectly. One part of the song, however, feels suitably like the opposite to what is happening now. At one point, Trent Reznor sings “I think I used to have a voice, now I never make a sound”. Except lockdown has been anything but silent. It has also shown that nothing will stop people campaigning for social justice and shouting at the top of their voice in the name of what is right.
