Don’t You Remember // Adele
Adele is well known as the queen of breakup songs, her voice stirs emotions you didn’t even realise you felt. So when I was dumped a few months into lockdown I turned to her seeking comfort.
In amongst the familiar and more popular songs I rediscovered ‘Don’t You Remember’, and it felt like Adele had pierced through the noise and looked directly at me. She opens asking “when will I see you again, you left with no goodbye” lamenting over “no final kiss to seal anything”, the overwhelming feeling of abandonment and inability to access her lost love resonated with me given the countrywide lockdown. She is reaching out into the abyss but he is already gone. ‘Don’t You Remember’ is a cry that falls on deaf ears of a partner who has vanished entirely, a cry that I was screaming along to, alone in quarantine.
