Chemical Reaction // Galaxians – Michael Price
Released: 26 June 2020
Starting out as a duo, Galaxians expertly fused Jed Skinner’s old skool funk, disco and house synths with Matt Woodward’s air-tight percussion; the resulting grooves easily infectious enough to make a corpse’s arse wiggle. Perhaps eager to augment their instrumentals with a vocal dimension, adding words to their utterly spondicious rhythms or conscious of how far they could realistically go as a duo, Galaxians’ masterstroke came with the addition of Emma Mason on vocals.
Mason’s formidable pipes – perhaps redolent of Candi Staton or Denise Johnson – transformed Galaxians into an urban pop powerhouse with a distinctly 1980s feel. Emma’s serially-wronged-woman vibe creates an emotional antidote to the decadent party atmosphere, beautifully finished off with smatterings of guitar and bass. Pick of the tracks on Chemical Reaction are ‘Don’t Need U’, the ultimate fuck-you roller-disco break-up anthem as well as ‘Heat of the City’ seemingly prized unmolested from a time-capsule hewn from the rubble following the demolition of the Hacienda.
Get down and groove, we dance all day in this house.
