Steve Burton is finally making a long-awaited return to General Hospital, as revealed during ABC’s primetime special commemorating the 60th anniversary of the long-running soap opera. This exciting announcement, strategically timed after GH‘s anniversary, left fans eagerly anticipating what’s in store for the ever-dramatic world of Port Charles.

“Happy anniversary, General Hospital,” Burton said as he walked through a doorway, flanked by cast members Laura Wright and Kelly Monaco. “Big things are coming to Port Charles.”

Burton, known for playing Jason Morgan on ABC’s General Hospital since 1991, left the show in November 2021 due to his non-compliance with the COVID-19 vaccine mandate. Both he and Ingo Rademacher faced termination, leading to a legal dispute for Rademacher that ultimately ended in disappointment for him.

Burton’s character met an uncertain fate on the November 19 episode when a tunnel on Cassadine Island collapsed on him. Although presumed dead, his body was never found, and the show opted not to recast the role, preserving the character’s legacy.

Steve Burton personally announced his departure on Instagram in 2021, expressing disappointment at being let go due to the vaccine mandate. “I wanted you to hear it from me personally,” he said at the time on Instagram.

“Unfortunately, General Hospital has let me go because of the vaccine mandate. I did apply for my medical and religious exemptions, and both of those were denied. Which, you know, hurts. But this is also about personal freedom to me.” But he also left the door open to come back. “Maybe one day if these mandates are lifted, I can return and finish my career as Jason Morgan. That would be an honour.”

As the 60th-anniversary celebrations continue, Burton’s return, scheduled for the early months of 2024, adds another layer of nostalgia to the historic milestone. During his absence from General Hospital, Burton appeared on Days of Our Lives, streaming on Peacock, where he recently wrapped up filming his final episode.

The soap opera world is buzzing with excitement as Port Charles prepares to welcome back the beloved character. This not only signifies a cherished reunion but also strengthens the lasting legacy of the character Jason Morgan, leaving fans on the edge of their seats for the much-anticipated reunion.
