Composers Stephen Barton and Gordy Haabs were awarded Best Gaming Score at the 2024 Grammy Awards for their work on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
The hit sequel was placed against acclaimed soundtracks from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (Sarah Schachner), Hogwarts Legacy (Peter Murray, J Scott Rakozy and Chuck E. Myers), God of War Ragnarök (Bear McCreary) and Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical (Montaigne, Tripod and Austin Wintory). God of War Ragnarök was also nominated for Best Immersive Audio Album.
During his acceptance speech, Haabs first said “We’d both like to thank EA, in particular our co-producer Steve Schnur for his leadership and creativity” and later thanked Lucasfilm Games and everyone at the Disney Music group. Barton added: “Big thanks to Alan Meyerson our genius engineer, Nick Laviers, Max McGuire, Vince Zampella and the amazing team at Respawn and EA Music”. He later gave a touching thanks to his school music teacher and their importance: “Music teachers are the most important thing. So I dedicate this to mine. Thank you so, so much”.
The duo’s previous score on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order won the award for Video Game Score of the Year (for the Game Awards 2020) and Outstanding Original Score for Interactive Media (for the Society of Composers and Lyricists 2020). Therefore, it came as no surprise that they won again for their immense choral composition work for Jedi Survivor.
The Best Gaming Score category was introduced at last year’s 65th Grammy Awards making this only the second time this award has been given. Last year’s award was given to Stephanie Economou’s composition on the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla expansion, Dawn of Ragnarök which was released in 2022.
