Sly & The Family Stone have released an animated video adaptation of their 1968 song ‘Everyday People’ in support of Black History Month.
2021 saw Sony’s entertainment channel, This Is Certified, collaborating with BET Digital to establish a four-part digital series in celebration of Black History Month.
The #MyBlackIs four-part programme produces weekly animations exploring power, love, history, and culture, and has so far been a huge success.
This campaign includes track adaptations from both old and new artists eager to share their support for diversity and culture, and features Muhammed Ali, Sly & The Family Stone, and Chloe X Halle to name a few.
“My Black Is Power” kicked off this four-part series with ‘I Am The Greatest’ featuring heavyweight champion Muhammed Ali. “My Black Is Love” then followed suit with ‘Killing Me Softly’; an adaptation of The Score’s famous hit that was controversially banned across America after its release in 1996.
‘Everyday People’ is the third installment of this series and projects “My Black Is History”.
Written and produced by Sly Stone, this classic was the first single by a popular American pop/rock group to get to number one on the Soul Chart.
Sly & The Family Stone’s ‘Everyday People’ also spent four weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969.
As the “first major American pop-rock group with a racially integrated lineup of male and female musicians, Sly & The Family Stone broke down multiple barriers with their melodic hook-filled radio-friendly sound…and straight up stardust magic.”
Viewers of ‘Everyday People’ are greeted with the opening message: “Now more than ever, the message of this song resonates across the globe.”
With the Black Lives Matter movement taking the world by storm in 2020, this four-part digital series has built on tones of diversity and culture as well as creating admirable content.
This video takes us on a journey through a lively neighborhood, introducing us to a world of diverse characters of varying ethnicities and ages, uniting them as one.
‘Everyday People’ “has a timeless groove that still makes people happy and gets them on the dance-floor” and is the perfect choice for this week’s “My Black Is”‘.
