Single Review: To My Surprise // James

The return of Manchester legends James came last month with the announcement of a new album ‘Girl At The End Of The World’, to be released 18th March 2016 and a UK tour throughout May 2016.

Following the release of  2014’s ‘La Petite Mort’ came ‘To My Surprise’. With the repetitive back beat keeping time of throughout, the song carries an upbeat and energetic energy from start to finish. “Don’t do what I have done do what I say” is the key phrase leading into the both lyrically and melodically powerful chorus.

The lyrics, as in much of the band’s previous work, have a more poetic edge in the manner of line structure and beat, with the music as more of an accompaniment than in most tracks. The song’s anthemic quality is clinched by classic lines such as “were you just born an arsehole”, which add a sarcastic twist to the title. This song does not disappoint as a return for James.
