YNES‘ latest single ‘Better Jobs’ brings a new form of political punk to the table. Written as a kind of “fuck you” to Rishi Sunak, following reports of derogatory comments the Chancellor made about the creative industries, the single is indicative of YNES’ feisty sound. It’s relative in rhythm and tone to her work on December’s Sit Down, Grow Up EP. It rings similar to ‘Pretty Sure’, the EP’s second track, which best displays YNES’ talent as a vocal DIY post-punk artist, but in ways its contents are also different.
The lyrics are more aggressive than ‘Pretty Sure’; they’re more rebellious, capturing creatives’ frustrations with the current government administration. Its mixture of punk vibes and the chaotic structure demonstrates a core understanding of the post-punk scene, and through the track YNES perfectly captures how people are feeling in lockdown 3.0.
