NBC’s long-running cop comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine will come to an end after the upcoming eighth season. The show will end with a shortened, 10-episode season bringing the total episodes of the series to 153. Its airdate has been delayed to the 2021-22 television season due to COVID-related delays.

This is the second time that the show has been cancelled. Fox cancelled the show in 2018, after five seasons, but it was brought back by NBC. However this time it seems like the 99th precinct’s doors will be closing for good.

In a statement, series co-creator Dan Goor said: “I’m so thankful to NBC and Universal Television for allowing us to give these characters and our fans the ending they deserve. Ending the show was a difficult decision, but ultimately we felt it was the best way to honour the characters, the story and our viewers.”

Recently, the sitcom has come under fire for its portrayal of the police. Following the Black Lives Matter protests, they were accused of glorifying the police and ignoring police brutality in their show. In response, the writers of the show significantly reworked the new season in order to reflect the events of last year. The cast as a whole donated $100,000 to the National Bail Fund Network (a national project that aims to change local bail systems and reduce incarceration).

Series star Andre Braugher, who plays Captain Holt, said of this: “It could be a really groundbreaking season that we’re all going to be very proud of, or we’re going to fall flat on our face. But I think this is a staff, a cast and a crew that’s willing to give it our best.”

The cast took to social media to commiserate about the end of the show. Melissa Fumero tweeted: “It has been one of the greatest joys and honours of my life to play Amy. I am so grateful to be able to take a victory lap with our beloved cast and crew.”

Terry Crews also took to Twitter, stating: “I am sad it will end, but happy to have had the chance to be part of something special.”

The UK airdate for Season 8 has yet to be revealed. Given the delay in production, it won’t be until at least Spring 2022. Luckily fans still have the seventh season, which arrives on Netflix on March 26th, to tide them over until then.
