Edgar Wright’s action comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is to be re-released in UK cinemas, as part of continued celebrations of the 10th anniversary of the film’s original theatrical run.
Scott Pilgrim, a dorky musician played by Michael Cera, is forced to defeat ‘seven evil exes’ in order to win over Ramona Flowers, an itinerant delivery girl brought to life by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Those seven evil exes challenge Scott to a series of increasingly eye-popping boss-battles in a film that has both the character and structure of a retro-style video game.
Though the film was a box office bomb back in 2010, it has since developed a cult following, with newcomers attracted by its highly individualistic visual flair and sense of humour. Celebrations for the film’s 10th anniversary began last year, with Wright planning numerous events and releases stretching into this summer. It’s likely then that most fans won’t have experienced it in cinemas the first time round, so they will be wanting to make the most of it during the new release window.
By the time of Scott Pilgrim‘s release, Wright had established himself in Britain as one of the country’s best comedy directors. The first two entries in the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy—Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz—had been met with critical and commercial success in the UK, and his TV series Spaced was also well received. But Scott Pilgrim was Wright’s first Hollywood film. As a result of the flop, he would have to wait until 2015 to return with his second effort, the heist music car-chase knockaround Baby Driver.
Other memorable cast members in the film asides Cera and Winstead include Brie Larson, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, and Jason Schwartzman.
In March, a commemorative vinyl box set for the film’s soundtrack and score was released. In July 2020, the cast of the film reunited with Wright over Zoom to raise money for Water for People.
