The star of hit shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve, Sandra Oh, looks to have found her next project in Iris K. Shim’s upcoming supernatural horror film Umma.
The film centres around Amanda (Oh) and her daughter who, while living a quiet life on an American farm, receive the remains of her estranged mother from Korea. Soon after its arrival, Amanda becomes haunted by the fear of becoming her mother.
While that isn’t too much to go off of, the talent both in front and behind the camera is more than enough to get you excited for this film.
Sandra Oh is already a household name thanks to her excellent performance as Eve Polastri in Killing Eve, which earned the Canadian-American actor the Golden Globe for Best Performance in a Television Series – Drama, the second Golden Globe she has won. Having her alone makes me excited for this film but fortunately, the talent doesn’t start and end with her.
While Umma may be Iris K. Shim’s theatrical debut, she has already made a reputation for herself with 2010’s The House of Suh. The 90-minute documentary explored the tragic story of the Suh Family and the murder that shook America to its core. So yes, while Shim is yet to direct a theatrical release, the many awards she already has under her belt speak volumes of the talent on display and makes me confident this will be a hit.

I’m not the only one who is confident in Umma ,as legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi is set to produce the film through his new production company Raimi Productions. Raimi already has many films under his belt like the Spider-Man trilogy (I still stand by Spider-Man 3) and The Evil Dead saga but with Raimi Productions only being recently established, it doesn’t have too many titles just yet. Currently, the only film produced is 2019’s Crawl from Alexandre Aja which followed a woman (Kaya Scodelario) being trapped in a flooding house with alligators and was met with positive critical reception.
If the excellent premise, directing and cast is anything to go by, hopefully, Umma will be the great next addition to Raimi Productions’ filmography.
COVID permitting, Umma is slated to begin production in April.
