Review: be alright // Lucy Deakin

Mancunian Lucy Deakin has started making waves in the world of modern pop. Writing and recording everything in the bedroom of her producer and songwriting partner Karl Ziegler, she’s already been on several of Spotify’s editorial-curated playlists. She has been heavily championed by BBC Introducing’s Rob Adcock, who declared her as being one of his “Big in 2020” acts. That’s some serious acclaim for an artist who’s only put out one EP so far! She’s very much gearing up for her second release currently; ‘be alright’ is the third track from that new EP.

A tale of the highs and lows found in a new relationship, ‘be alright’ follows on from her previous two singles ‘bad in love’ and ‘we could be’. Like her previous music, ‘be alright’ is a colourful yet melancholic slice of incredibly catchy pop, full of stuttering ultra-modern production. Whilst it may sound like yet another slice of bedroom pop in the vein of Billie Eilish or Charli XCX, you can tell right from the first few seconds that Deakin has ambitions far beyond that. Deakin and Ziegler dip into the future-pop playbook, creating something that’s got the retro-futuristic qualities of acts like Blaqk Audio, but mixed with deeper, dark-pop lyricisms. It’s a brilliant and catchy stylistic mix that’ll no doubt send Deakin up the charts in the future.

Much like ‘bad in love’ and ‘we could be’, the music video is incredibly creative, involving a similar aesthetic, and continues on from the earlier narrative. Numerous Gen-Z cultural references are spread throughout the video. Deakin sitting down at an old glowing Apple computer and the vibrant spread of colours bring a warm yet eerie air of nostalgia. It’s a fantastic video that really compliments the song, just as the earlier two videos do.

All in all, ‘be alright’ is a fantastic slice of current pop. With EPs as strong as this, there’s no doubt that there are big things in store for Lucy Deakin in the future!
