New films from Mia Hansen-Love, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, François Ozon and more will compete in this year’s edition of the prestigious event.

The full line-up for the 74th Cannes Film Festival has been announced during a live-streamed press conference.

The official selection was announced by Pierre Lescure, President of the Cannes Film Festival, and Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate, who called the festival “a fantastic eruption of life coming back.”

Julia Ducournau, director of acclaimed horror film Raw, will compete for the Palme d’or with her new film Titane. Joining her will be Justin Kurzel with Nitram, Mia Hansen-Love with Bergman Island, and Joachim Trier with Julie (En 12 Chapitres), among others.

The Un Certain Regard selection includes After Yang from Columbus director Kogonada, while the Special Screenings category will be host to Charlotte Gainsbourg’s directorial debut Jane Par Charlotte. A new category, Cannes Premieres, will show Eva Husson’s Mothering Sunday, starring Josh O’ Connor and Olivia Colman. Also premiering will be Pieces of a Woman director Kornél Mundruczo’s Evolution and English director Andrea Arnold’s fifth feature, Cow.

This announcement comes after Annette, Leos Carax’s much anticipated sixth feature, was confirmed to be the festival’s opening film. Starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, the musical will tell the story of Henry, a stand-up comedian, and Ann, a singer of international renown. The other two previously announced premieres include Paul Verhoeven’s lesbian nun drama Benedetta and Wes Anderson’s long-delayed The French Dispatch.

Jodie Foster will act as a special guest for the festival’s Opening Ceremony, receiving an Honorary Palme d’or for her services to cinema and her “brilliant artistic journey.”

American director Spike Lee will act as President of the Jury for the 2021 edition, after he was meant to do so at 2020’s cancelled festival. “Spike Lee has never stopped encouraging us,” says festival president Pierre Lescure. “This support is finally coming to fruition and we could not have hoped for a more powerful personality to chart our troubled times.”

Normally taking place annually in May on the sunny French Riviera, the Cannes Film Festival is a Mecca for film critics, cinephiles and celebrities alike. With the 2020 edition cancelled, the most recent winner of the coveted Palme d’or was Bong Joon-ho’s seismic Parasite in 2019.

This year, delegates from the United Kingdom will unlikely be able to attend, with strict quarantine rules on both sides of the channel still in place.

The 74th Cannes Film Festival will take place 6–17 July, 2021. See the full line-up below.
