The Bush Theatre has announced that it will reopen with a new play from acclaimed playwright Travis Alabanza.
Overflow is described as “a hilarious and devastating tour of women’s bathrooms.” Through a monologue performance, Alabanza’s protagonist Rosie reminisces on her past experiences. She recalls the various friendships forged with strangers, and therapy sessions taken in grubby toilet cubicles as she stands amidst an overflowing bathroom stall.
The play is directed by Debbie Hannan, the incoming Co-Artistic Director of the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh. Lynette Linton, the artistic director of the Bush Theatre, said that she is excited to be producing work that “reflects and interrogates society.”
The play seeks to shed a light on the societal rejection of other female-identifying people, explored from inside the gender nominated bathroom space.
The play’s announcement comes ahead of Transgender Awareness Week, which begins on the 20th of November.
In line with current COVID-19 restrictions, the Bush Theatre is enforcing social distancing inside the venue, with a maximum capacity of 63. Audience members are asked to wear face coverings at all times unless they have an exemption.
Overflow is showing at the Bush Theatre from the 8th to the 22nd of December. Tickets can be purchased from the theatre website.
