If there’s been only one breakout star in 2021, it must be Olivia Rodrigo. Embodying a sense of teenage rage to rival Hayley Williams circa 2007, combined with a revitalised y2k aesthetic, the 18-year-old has etched her name into pop-culture history with the success of her debut album, Sour.
It was only a matter of time before Rodrigo announced a tour to complement her album, and so fans will be pleased to hear of the star’s recent confirmation. The Sour Tour is due to commence in April 2022, with 48 shows across North America and Europe.
Whilst a global tour may feel like an inevitability for the teenager, given the commercial and critical success of her existing catalogue, music was not actually Rodrigo’s first professional endeavour.
Rodrigo initially found fame with the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, starring as protagonist Nini Salazar-Roberts. By nature of her character’s storyline – the little girl with the big voice – a professional musical career seemed like the natural next step for the actress. Unlike previous Disney graduates, however, Rodrigo managed to craft a music career with songwriting as her primary vehicle. Her individual vocal breakout occured with the inclusion of ‘All I Want’ in the show’s soundtrack, sung by her character in the series.
The subsequent release of ‘drivers license’ was a breakthrough moment for the artist, which saw Rodrigo present herself to the world as a candidate for superstardom. Subsequent releases ‘deja vu’ and ‘good 4 u’ demonstrated what we now understand to be the two sides of Rodrigo’s artistry – full-frontal emotional vulnerability, and a genuine coolness rooted in teen angst.
What was originally planned to be an EP flourished into Rodrigo’s full-length debut album. Sour has since skyrocketed to the top of the charts globally, and has contributed to Rodrigo’s receipt of seven nominations at the 64th Grammy Awards.
Though Billboard had initially reported an inevitable delay to a potential tour due to Rodrigo’s acting commitments with Disney, fans will not have to wait much longer to see Rodrigo live in their city. Her first concert tour will, undoubtedly, be an intimate viewing, with most of her UK shows taking place at venues with maximum capacities of roughly 3,000 to 5,000.
