Veteran actor Sean Connery, known for playing James Bond as well as many other iconic roles in cinema, has passed away aged 90.
Sean Connery is most famous for being the first actor to play British spy James Bond on-screen, first doing so in Dr. No in 1962 and followed by another six movies released until 1983. To this day, he frequently tops ‘Best Bond’ polls, with the role turned him into an international icon.
Outside of Bond, he also starred in films such as Highlander, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Hunt For Red October and The Untouchables, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1988.
Though no cause of death has yet been given, Connery’s son Jason confirmed that his father had “been unwell for some time”, and that he “had many of his family who could be in the Bahamas around him” when he passed away during the night.
Connery, who was knighted in 2000, has been mourned by many people worldwide, including Nicola Sturgeon, who called him “a global legend” and “a patriotic and proud Scot”, and Gary Lineker, who described him as “a real character”. However, particularly in recent years, the actor had come under fire for his history with and comments on domestic abuse.
A polarizing figure, his impact on cinema as we know it cannot be ignored. Rest in Peace, Mr. Bond.
