Nominations have been announced for the 2023 WhatsOnStage Awards. The awards, now in their 23rd year, celebrate the best of talent on the West End, honouring the cast and creatives of both plays and musicals. It is one of the only theatre awards to be fully voted on by the general public.
This year’s crop of nominees include the RSC’s adaptation of My Neighbour Totoro, with the most nominations (nine), The National Theatre’s courtroom drama Prima Facie starring Jodie Comer, as well as a number of musical revivals including Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! (with eight nominations), and Spring Awakening. Outside of London, regional productions nominated include The Curve Leicester’s production of Billy Elliot, and The Great British Bake-Off Musical which debuted in Cheltenham this Summer.
In the acting categories, which are gender-neutral, performers nominated include the likes of Jonathan Bailey (Cock), David Tennant (Good), Carrie Hope Fletcher (The Caucasian Chalk Circle), Rafe Spall (To Kill a Mockingbird) and more. On the musicals side of the nominations, actors include Courtney Bowman (Legally Blonde), John Owen-Jones (The Great British Bake-Off Musical) , and Marisha Wallace (Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!).
Nominations for all 24 categories, including two brand-new ones (Best Concert Event and Best Professional Debut Performance), were announced by Leah Harvey and Alfred Enoch, who currently star in As You Like It at Soho Place.
The winners, which can be voted on here, will be announced at a special concert at the Prince of Wales Theatre taking place on 12 February 2023. Tickets can be purchased here.
