Anyone familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe knows that, well – it’s pretty damn big. So condensing hours of stories, characters and adventure into a video-game can be difficult, to say the least. But Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics are on a mission to give 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man a run for its money, with their upcoming addition to the Marvel game franchise; Marvel’s Avengers.
Fans will be able to play as some of the most recognisable characters from the MCU such as Hulk, Black Widow and Thor – but the breath of fresh air comes in the form of Kamala Khan (or Ms Marvel), said to reunite the team of heroes at the start of the game after a devastating event tears them apart; although please be kind on us Enix, I don’t feel like going through the feels of Endgame all over again.
And if coronavirus means you can’t play with your mates in real life, Marvel’s Avengers has got you covered, with online co-op for up to four players. As well as working together with friends, Crystal Dynamics also revealed plans to steadily introduce a whole host of new characters, the first being Hawkeye as part of downloadable content released after the game’s initial debut.
Gameplay footage from the official beta trailer already looks pretty good, but as the seemingly the narrative-driven game that it is, I’d be interested to see how new characters are introduced, whether embedded in the plotline or simply as downloadable side missions. Either way, game updates and downloads like Hawkeye are sure to keep players interested.
Whilst a game’s compatibility with cross-gen consoles is normally an issue for AAA franchises, developers, and players themselves – Marvel’s Avengers might have found the solution. If fans pre-order for their PS4 or Xbox One consoles, they’ll receive a free upgrade to either PS5 or Xbox Series X version of the game, so no worries there either. Pre-ordering will also get fans free access to the early beta version of the game in August, and a Marvel Legacy Outfit pack and an exclusive nameplate. Pre-ordering from different retailers also provides different perks in addition to all of these, just in case that wasn’t enough!
The game itself lands on September 4th for PS4, Xbox One and PC, and with all these bonuses, pre-ordering the game seems like the best option. But whether we’ll love it 3000 or not is an entirely different matter altogether.
