Netflix has released the trailer for season three of The Witcher, and it looks like it’s going to be more action-packed and spellbinding than the last. Spoilers for season two ahead.
Season two ended on a big reveal: though previously thought to have died in the shipwreck that killed her mother, Ciri’s father is actually alive. Not only that, he is the ruler of Nilfgaard and the architect of the invasion of the North and much of the ensuing conflict on the Continent. He seeks to claim Ciri and weaponise her power for his own corrupt means.
The official plot for season three, released courtesy of Netflix, goes as follows:
“As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it.
“Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where they hope to uncover more about the girl’s untapped powers. Instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line – or risk losing each other forever.”
The show’s newest instalment will feature many of the same players from the previous series, with Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Freya Allen as Cirilla (Ciri) and Joey Batey as the show’s much-loved bard, Jaskier. In April 2022, four new additions to the cast were announced: Meng’er Zhang (Shang-Chi), Robbie Amell (Upload), Hugh Skinner (Fleabag), and Christelle Elwin (Bloods).
The new series will be based on Time of Contempt, the second novel in Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher saga, and has been promised to be a faithful adaptation to the source material.
The close of this series will mean the sun will have set on Cavill’s time on the show. In 2022, he announced his departure on Twitter and Instagram, adding, “I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.”
Season four, which will usher in Liam Hemsworth as Geralt, is in the early stages of production, with a fifth season already confirmed.
Following the trend of shows like Stranger Things and You, season three will be split into two volumes. Volume 1 will be released on June 29, while Volume 2 will premiere on July 27.
