Netflix has recently announced that Minecraft will be turned into an animated series. As the best-selling video game of all time with over 300 million copies sold worldwide, there is already a fanbase ready for the upcoming series.
The project has been handed to WildBrain Studios, the company behind another popular video game adaptation Sonic Prime, as well as other hit animated series, Carmen Sandiego and Ninjago: Dragons Rising. WildBrain will work in collaboration with Mojang Studios, the original developer of Minecraft.
The series was announced 30 May, following on from the 15-day celebration of the iconic game’s 15th birthday. The series is set to “tell an original story with new characters and reflect the world of Minecraft in a new light”. Minecraft released a teaser trailer on their YouTube channel featuring some of the game’s most iconic scenes and sounds, with a creeper crossing the screen and exploding to reveal a lava filled cave before zooming in on Netflix’s iconic logo.
Fans are both nervous and excited, with nearly two million combined views on the Minecraft and Netflix announcement trailers and thousands of comments on both videos expressing their delight, concerns, and hope for the series. The choice to make the series animated has been commended by many fans, while others share their disappointment that a new project is being started instead of renewing the popular series Minecraft: Story Mode.
Video game adaptations have been popular with both producers and fans in recent years, with successes like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Witcher and The Last of Us—a welcome change for fans following decades of video game adaptations many consider lacklustre.
Minecraft will also be adapted into a movie starring Jack Black as the main character Steve. Minecraft: The Movie is set to be released on 4 April 2025 and has attracted other big names like Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Jennifer Collidge (The White Lotus) and Danielle Brooks (Peacemaker), proving that video games maintain their presence and appeal in Hollywood.
